How to open a library account

Whether you study or work at KIT, HKA or DHBW, come from another university or simply want to use the KIT Library as a private individual – your personal library account is just a few clicks away.

Employees and students of KIT, HKA and DHBW can open a library account online here. A valid employee or student card and acceptance of the user terms and conditions are required.

External users and students from other universities can also open a library account. You should submit your details in advance using the registration form and visit the KIT Library during service hours to activate your account. Please bring these documents with you.

Why do you need a library account?
  • To borrow books and media from the KIT Library on site. 
  • To access licensed electronic resources from the KIT Library (remote access is restricted to students and employees of KIT, HKA and DHBW).
  • To have access to KIT-Bibliothek Süd even outside service hours.
Where do I get my library card?
  • Employees and students of KIT, HKA and DHBW Karlsruhe use their employee or student card as a library card.
     

The following applies to private individuals and students of another university:

  • New library cards for external users and students from other universities will only be issued on site at the library.
The following cards can be activated on site:
  • valid PH Karlsruhe student ID cards,
  • valid library cards from the Badische Landesbibliothek Karlsruhe,
  • valid library cards from the Stadtbibliothek Karlsruhe.
What does my library card cost? 
  • Members and students not affiliated with any institute are charged a one time fee of 15 Euros.
  • The following can access the library free of charge:  employees and students of the KIT, HKA or DHBW, who hold a valid KIT-Card; library card holders of the Badische Landesbibliothek Karlsruhe or the Stadtbibliothek Karlsruhe
Which documents do you need to bring as a external user or student of another university to open your library card?
  • The "Registration form for opening a library account" should be completed online.
  • A valid official ID (identity card, residence permit, passport).
  • If available, a valid student ID card from the PH Karlsruhe or a valid library card from the Badische Landesbibliothek Karlsruhe or the Stadtbibliothek Karlsruhe.
  • If your address in Germany is not visible on your identity card, a confirmation from the residents' registration office (not older than 6 months) must be submitted.
  • For applicants under the age of 18 a written permission is required from their legal representative or guardian.
Which services of KIT-Bibliothek Süd can you use without a library card?
  • During the service hours of the KIT-Bibliothek Süd, you can enter the library without a library card.
  • During this time, you can also use the freely accessible collections within the library.
  • By entering the library building, you recognise the KIT Library's user regulations.
