Faculty members at KIT and at HKA – Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences can have the literature relevant to their course made available in a course reserve. 

Conventional Course Reserves

• Only books are included in course reserves; journals or journal volumes are not accepted. For primary sources, fiction, and editions of classics, the available edition is added to the collection.
• Books in the course reserve are not available for checkout and are therefore accessible to all students in the reading room.
• Course reserves should not contain more than 20 books.
• Course reserves are set up for the duration of one semester. An extension is possible on a case-by-case basis.
• Semester collections are located in the KIT Library South in the Humanities Reading Room (3rd floor of the new building, shelf 4/1) and in the HKA in the quiet zone.

Here’s how it works

• At least two weeks before the start of the semester, email your complete reading list—including the desired books and the name of the semester collection—to semesterapparat∂bibliothek.kit.edu. The reading list should include the author, title, and year of publication, as well as the location, call number, and subject group.
• Please indicate whether a work can also be included in the semester collection in a different edition or print run.
• All semester collections are accessible in the KIT Library catalog under “Semester Collections.” If you search the catalog for a book that is currently included in a semester collection, a corresponding reference will appear next to the title.

Semester Collection with Items from the KIT Library and the Badische Landesbibliothek

It is also possible to set up a semester collection that includes materials from both the KIT Library and the Badische Landesbibliothek. This allows your students to find the relevant materials in one place.
The collection, created in cooperation by both libraries, is set up either at the Badische Landesbibliothek or here at KIT. The deciding factor is the number of books: If you select more books from the Badische Landesbibliothek’s collection, the collection will be set up there; if the majority of the books are from the KIT Library’s collection, the collection will be set up at our library.

Digital Course Reserves at KIT

• As a faculty member at KIT, you can have media from the KIT Library digitized for your course reserve: The media will be scanned for you and sent to you via email in PDF format.
• Digital course reserves at KIT are available on the ILIAS learning platform: You set up the course reserve on ILIAS and are responsible for complying with copyright regulations.

Here’s how it works

• At least two weeks before the start of the semester, email your complete reading list with the desired titles to semesterapparat∂bibliothek.kit.edu. The reading list should include the author, title, and year of publication, as well as the location, call number, and subject group. Please specify which pages from books or which articles from journals are to be scanned.
• Semester collections containing digitized materials from the KIT Library may only be accessible to a closed user group—i.e., the participants in your course. You may therefore only grant access to the ILIAS course to the actual participants in your course. You may not permanently store the documents in the course collection but must make them available only for the duration of the course. Please delete the digitized materials when the time comes.
• Students gain access to digital course reserves through an automatic synchronization with student data during the ILIAS login process. This ensures that only authorized users have access to a course reserve and that applicable copyright regulations are complied with. No copyrighted materials may be published in divisions without password protection.
• Under the German Copyright Act (UrhG § 60a “Instruction and Teaching”), provided that only authorized users have access to the course reserve, parts of copyrighted works may also be digitized and made available. Further information can be found here.
