The Cost of Knowledge

International Open Access Week will take place from October 19 to 25, 2026. Under the theme “The Cost of Knowledge,” it will focus on the costs of scholarly publishing and the question of how knowledge can be made accessible with sustainability and openness.

Scholarly publishing involves a variety of costs—ranging from the financial expenses associated with publications and access to the societal consequences of limited availability, as well as the environmental impacts of existing publication structures. Open Access creates new opportunities to make research findings freely accessible and to share knowledge within the scientific community and beyond.

The KIT Library is participating in Open Access Week with three events. The focus will be on issues related to data tracking, research data, and collaboratively developed and supported publication infrastructures.

Open Paper Dialog: “How Much Do Data Cost Knowledge?” – Data Tracking in the Academic System
What does “the cost of knowledge” mean when not only are licenses paid for, but data is also generated when using academic resources? The Open Paper Dialog addresses this question using a text by Dr. Renke Siems. Following the format of a book club, the selected text will be discussed and explored with the author.

Round Table: “Open Science at KIT: Show Us Your Data”
What experiences have there been with open science and research data at KIT? At the roundtable, KIT researchers will exchange views on challenges and potential solutions. The event will be held in English; registration is not required.

October 22, 2026 | 10:30 a.m.–12:00 p.m. | online “Low-cost
and no-cost, community-developed services” – Online panel discussion
The third course focuses on community-developed and community-supported services for institutional publishers. Selected services and initiatives that support publication infrastructures at low or no cost will be presented. An open discussion will follow, providing an opportunity for questions, sharing experiences, and constructive criticism. The event will be held in English; registration is not required.
