The open-access movement emerged in response to the rising costs of scientific publications and the associated restrictions on access. In the early 2000s, the groundwork was laid for a broader discussion about free access to scientific research. Since then, numerous institutions—including universities, research institutes, and funding organizations—have adopted and actively promoted these principles. Researchers are encouraged to publish their work in open-access formats or to make it available in institutional repositories.

Access to information without financial barriers for researchers, students, and other interested parties promotes innovation and the transfer of knowledge. Furthermore, OA improves the transparency and reproducibility of scientific work and strengthens global collaboration.

Despite major challenges, such as the further development and establishment of funding models, Open Access is key to the democratization of knowledge and promotes broad access to research findings.
