KITopen is the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology’s central repository for publishing and archiving scientific works and teaching materials. It enables KIT members to make their research results and digital content freely accessible—permanently, in a citable format, and in line with KIT’s Open Access strategy. Through global visibility in catalogs, search engines, and specialized portals, KITopen supports transparent, sustainable, and responsible scientific communication.

KITopen Depositing & Publishing
Use this tool to deposit the bibliographic data for your publication into the KITopen repository and publish related full-text articles, research data, audio and video recordings, teaching materials, or images.
KITopen Catalog
Use the catalog function to search for publications and media deposited in the KITopen repository.
KITopen Teaching
KIT Library supports you in digital teaching by offering you the opportunity to upload digital media formats—such as teaching materials and other audio and video content—to the KITopen repository and make them available worldwide via KIT Library’s Media Portal.
KITopen Bibliometrics & Statistics
This service allows you to evaluate the reception of your publications in international citation databases and on social media—using both traditional bibliometric indicators and alternative metrics. General information on metrics can be found on the “Publication Metrics and Reporting” page.
The KITopen Top Publications tool provides you with a quick overview of the reception of your publications by identifying your top X publications with the most citations, page views, or downloads. To analyze more complex bibliometric queries, you can use the KITopen Metrics tool.
Top Publications (Assisted Mode)
KITopen Publication Lists
This tool allows you (or your institute or research group) to create lists of your publications stored in the KITopen Repository, sorted and formatted according to various criteria. You can also embed your publication list directly into your KIT website using KIT’s content management system (“OpenText Web Site Management”).
Content and Function
- KITopen publishes full-text articles by KIT researchers (Open Access).
- KITopen publishes and archives research data from KIT researchers.
- KITopen publishes teaching materials as well as audio and video content from or about KIT. The focus is on content produced by KIT, such as lecture recordings, which can also be subscribed to as podcasts.
- KITopen contains bibliographic data for all publications by KIT researchers.
Benefits for Authors
- All KIT employees with a valid KIT account have access to KITopen.
- All publications can be found via the KITopen Catalog and popular search engines, making them visible worldwide.
- Publishing is free and fast.
- Publications with full texts, research data, images, and permanently accessible audio and video content are assigned a DOI, ensuring that they can be cited and found permanently.
- You can apply an Open Access license to your publication; for research data, this is mandatory.
- Long-term archiving of your publication and the associated research data, images, and audio and video content is carried out in cooperation with the SCC.
- Link your profile to your ORCID iD to enhance your research impact.
Standards, Networking, and Quality
- KITopen supports the requirements of the EU’s Horizon Europe research framework program and collaborates with the German National Library.
- To increase the visibility of research information, bibliographic data is made available under CC0 (Public Domain) via OAI-PMH.
- KITopen adheres to the DINI quality criteria for open-access repositories.
- KITopen serves as the data foundation for reporting and PoF reports.
