Ariane has been with KIT Library since October 2024. Before that, she studied Interdisciplinary Life Sciences and worked in research for several years. After her time at KIT Library in Karlsruhe, she will spend another year continuing her education at the Bavarian Library Academy. 

After completing your studies and working in research, what motivated you to pursue a career in librarianship?
I was particularly motivated by the fact that libraries are home to many topics that are essential for future-oriented science. One example is “Open Science”—a concept that, in short, means Open Access to scientific research, from methods to results. But, quite pragmatically, the better job prospects compared to those in academia also led me to the library.

What are your strengths that shaped you during your studies and are now serving you well?
I have a wide range of interests and can get excited about many topics—which is why I chose a very interdisciplinary degree program right after high school. 

In which area of library work do you see yourself after your internship?
After my internship, I see myself working in a subject-specialist department, managing my subject areas—biology, mathematics, and physics—at a library. This includes, for example, deciding which books and journals the library should purchase and maintaining contact with local researchers. But subject specialization won’t be my only area of responsibility: I’ll also take on tasks in another department. Over the next few months, I’ll be exploring which divisions I find most exciting.

Can you tell us your favorite spot at KIT Library?
I especially enjoy sitting in one of the comfortable blue reading chairs in the LSG with a view of Karlsruhe or browsing the shelves of the Subject Library Mathematics.
