Today, scientific information is primarily created and made available in digital form. The scientific community and libraries have recognized the resulting need for long-term digital archiving and have jointly developed preservation systems such as LOCKSS and kopal.

• LOCKSS (Lots of Copies Keep Stuff Safe) is an open-source, peer-to-peer infrastructure for the decentralized preservation of digital media and ensures the integrity of the data.
• kopal (Cooperative Development of a Long-Term Archive of Digital Information) ensures long-term archiving as well as emulation, conversion, and migration to current data formats.

The Institute for Library and Information Science (IBI) at Humboldt University of Berlin, the Computer and Media Service (CMS) at Humboldt University of Berlin, and the German National Library (DNB) launched the LuKII (LOCKSS and KOPAL Infrastructure and Interoperability) was launched to establish a LOCKSS network in Germany with collaborating partners, to achieve interoperability with kopal, and, in a subsequent phase, to test the fully developed prototype.
As one of the project partners, the KIT Library operates a so-called LOCKSS Box in collaboration with the SCC and other German libraries as part of the LuKII network.
