re3data.org (Registry of Research Data Repositories) catalogs research data repositories from various scientific disciplines in a central, web-based search and discovery system.

The target audience for re3data.org consists primarily of researchers, infrastructure organizations, and funding agencies. re3data.org aims to provide a comprehensive inventory of research data repositories based on a documented search as well as a structural and content analysis of the offerings, taking into account the heterogeneity of the data held in the repositories.

The research and discovery system was designed and developed according to defined criteria that were iteratively refined over the course of the project. This led to an in-depth examination of quality requirements for research data repositories and the drafting of a set of criteria for ensuring the quality of these services. The project partners consistently align their activities with the current research discourse and are currently engaging in dialogue with other stakeholders and projects at the national and international levels. As part of the effort to ensure the long-term sustainability of re3data.org following the expiration of project funding, re3data.org has since been incorporated as a service into the DataCite portfolio.
