The project improves the use of lecture videos in ILIAS by linking the recording infrastructure to the learning platform. Through the ILIAS media portal, students can log in with their KIT account to search for spoken content in the recordings of their own courses, jump directly to relevant sections using bookmarks, and use subtitles in German and English. This is based on automatically generated transcripts, which provide the subtitles and are also incorporated into the search index. The search is limited to videos that the logged-in ILIAS user has access to.
The primary benefit lies in review and exam preparation, especially for students with hearing impairments and international students; at the same time, the service supports digital accessibility requirements.
Future plans include AI-powered descriptions and chapter markers, as well as the ability for users to correct recognition errors.
