With just a single ID, publications, data, and contributions are uniquely assigned and centrally recorded. This ensures that scientific work remains visible and measurable over the long term—at KIT and worldwide.

Easily Link KITopen and ORCID

Quick Start Guide

Link the two services in two steps:

  1. Log in to "Recording & Publication" on KITopen using your KIT account.
  2. In the “My KITopen” division, find the “ORCID and Your Profile” tile and follow the link.

KITopen is the central publication and repository system of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). It helps researchers publish their scientific work as open access, increase its visibility, and preserve it for the long term.

Research Profile ORCID

ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID) is a unique, persistent identifier for researchers. It makes it possible to unambiguously attribute scholarly work to a specific individual and facilitates better networking within the research community. It is free to use and widely adopted internationally.

Get the most out of your KITopen profile by submitting publications, maintaining your bibliography, and keeping your metadata up to date.

 

Check Your Own Media for Correct Assignment
As soon as new media items are received by KITopen, they are displayed as a number with a red border in the “Check Media” box.
  • Click “Check Media”
  • Check the list of media now displayed to see whether the items belong to your profile or not
Uploading and Cataloging Your Own Media
Clicking “My Media” displays the central list of recorded media that needs to be reviewed.
  • Is this list complete?
    In addition to publications, research data, presentations, and Open Educational Resources can also be recorded and published with a unique DOI (Digital
    Object Identifier). Click “Record Media” and add additional media.
  • Have the corresponding full-text files already been uploaded?
    Use the “Upload” button to add full-text files. 
Enhance your own media with additional research information
KITopen collaborates with other KIT institutions as part of a modular research information system. This requires additional personal research information.

Click on “My Media.” In the media list that appears, you can select individual entries and update them in “Edit Media” mode:
  • Content additions (keywords, abstract)
  • KIT-relevant information (POF structures, PSP elements, externally funded projects)
  • Custom labeling/sorting (KIT tags)
  • Relationships between media items (e.g., research data and publications)

Link your research profile to your ORCID iD
By linking KITopen to your ORCID iD, you can make the most of both services. Setup takes just a few steps: 
  • Click “Create or link ORCID iD now” in KITopen
  • Your personal ORCID iD will now also be displayed in other KITopen services
  • Through extended permission transfer, KITopen will manage your ORCID profile
Service for HGF Reporting 
The KIT Library generates publication metrics and reports relevant to Helmholtz reporting. Helmholtz quality indicators include publication counts, indexing in relevant databases, and the open access rate.
"My KITopen" offers specialized services related to Open Science and helps increase individual open-access rates.
  • As soon as relevant publications for HGF reporting are available, a tailored list is displayed—associated full-text documents can be uploaded directly. KITopen offers a legally compliant service for this purpose.

FAQs

Why do I need an ORCID ID at KIT?
The library regularly collects KIT research outputs from various databases and reference systems. Researchers at KIT benefit from having an ORCID ID, as it significantly improves the cataloging of their publications in KITopen. Data matching is then performed using the internationally recognized ORCID ID. In KITopen, publications, presentations, research data, Open Educational Resources (OER), and other research information are directly assigned to the relevant researchers based on their personal ORCID IDs.
What rights am I transferring to KITopen?
By transferring these rights, you recognize KITopen as a “trusted” source. You grant “read limited” rights so that KITopen can read and reuse the publicly available information from your ORCID profile. You also grant the “update biography” and “update activities” rights so that KITopen may update your ORCID profile with additional information from KIT.
How is my ORCID profile updated?
By reviewing and confirming your media list in KITopen, you can automatically populate your ORCID profile. You can find your media list on the “My KITopen” homepage under “Your Media in Your Profile.” Only media that have been reviewed in advance will then be transferred to ORCID.
