Dedicated to knowledge and research around the clock

Since 2006, the KIT Library South has been open around the clock—as one of the first 24-hour academic libraries in Germany and an integral part of campus life.

What began back then as an innovative pilot project has long since established itself as a model for flexible learning.

On July 24, we celebrated 20 years of the 24-hour library with a day of activities centered on learning without a schedule!

A New Kind of Library

Konzept

With the opening of the expansion wing on April 24, 2006, a new chapter in the use of academic libraries in Germany began at what was then the Karlsruhe University Library. As one of the first fully automated academic libraries, the University Library provided round-the-clock access to reading rooms and media—independent of traditional opening hours and without library staff on duty during the night. Within a short time, the traditional lending library transformed into a modern place for learning and working with a clear target: “never to close again.”

Even 20 years later, the 24-hour library remains one of the most popular study spots on the campus.

technical infrastructure

Technologie als Grundlage des 24/7-Betriebs

Round-the-clock operations are based on a fully technology-supported infrastructure. RFID technology, self-checkout stations, and automated return systems make it possible to check out and return materials at any time of the day or night. Over the years, this offering has been expanded to include additional services such as payment stations, automatic key dispensing, and the world’s first interlibrary loan kiosk, which the KIT Library developed in 2009. Continuous technical advancements continue to shape the library to this day.

Learning for Everyone, Anytime

Lernen jederzeit und für alle

With its open-access concept, the KIT Library quickly became a central learning hub on the campus. The electronic library card provides round-the-clock access to the subject-specific reading rooms and the extensive open-stack collections. At the same time, the library has evolved into a space that responds flexibly to the needs of different user groups—from extended study hours and digital services to practical support for everyday student life. The concept has thus become a model for other academic libraries beyond the region.

“Science and creative thinking can’t be squeezed into rigid daily schedules. Sometimes the best ideas just come in the middle of the night.

We are very proud that our services have been so well received for 20 years now. This success would not be possible without the tremendous dedication of our team, which works day in and day out to ensure that the library remains open, safe, and service-oriented at all times.”
