Together for open knowledge

Review International Open Access Week 2025 at KIT

Under the motto "Who owns our knowledge?", the KIT Library offered a diverse program on scientific publishing during the International Open Access Week. In online lectures, topics such as publication financing, repository use, the university's own publishing house, bibliometrics and research profiles, copyright and licensing, journal publishing and the publication of research data were highlighted. Many events met with great interest and offered the opportunity to obtain specific information.

As an on-site activity, the OApoly game was played during the lunch break on three days. Students were able to play the game and find out about the opportunities offered by academic publishing - and how Open Access can make their future research more visible.

The week ended with a special highlight: an interview with Prof. Oliver Kraft, conducted by Library Director Arne Upmeier. Prof. Kraft addressed the big questions surrounding the value and responsibility of scholarly communication:

  • Why are we investing so much in free access to knowledge when not all countries are following suit?
  • Who owns our knowledge - the researchers, the KIT or the general public?
  • And why is it so difficult to get out of commercially driven evaluation systems, even though they often do not adequately reflect scientific quality?

Many thanks to all speakers, participants and contributors - for their commitment, their questions and their contribution to an informative Open Access Week at KIT.
