Research, publish, earn a reputation!
OApoly is a game about researchers who have to publish scientific findings and increase their visibility. The target is to establish themselves as openly and transparently as possible in the scientific community and collect reputation points in the process.
The game conveys in an entertaining way the diverse roles that academic libraries take on today - for example in publication consulting, research data management or the establishment of fair open access structures. At the same time, it shows how public funds are used in the academic system and what added value open and free access to knowledge offers society. OApoly makes it clear: open science strengthens transparency, participation and democracy.

The rules of the game
Congratulations, your research project has been approved! Now it's time to publish your scientific results and data. In this game, you will find out what can happen and what you need to bear in mind. But you are not alone - your library will be by your side every step of the way. Immerse yourself in the world of scientific publishing and gain a reputation through skillful action!
Target of the game
As a researcher, you try to achieve as much impact and visibility as possible by building your reputation.
Game information
- Each player receives 5 talers at the start.
- Each player starts with 0 reputation points.
Gameplay
Rolling the dice and moving
The dice are rolled in turn and the figure moves forward according to the number rolled.
- If you land on a library space or open access space, you carry out the actions described.
- If you land on an event space, read the event card and follow the instructions on it. Events can either help you or challenge you.
Costs and scientific publishing
- Unfortunately, scientific publishing is not always free. You must therefore pay attention to how you spend your money and gain reputation points through libraries and open access.
Costs on fields and event cards
If you land on a field (e.g. library field or open access field) or draw an event card that incurs costs, you must pay for it with your talers. The exact number of talers to be paid is shown either on
the field or on the event card.
If you have no talers
If you do not have enough talers to cover the costs, you must either give up the same number of reputation points (or vice versa). If you also have no more reputation points, you must sit out a round,
while the other players continue.
End of the game
The game ends as soon as a player has reached 5 reputation points.
This player has achieved the greatest scientific impact and visibility and wins the game!
