On the history of KIT Library North
1956 Foundation of the library
In July 1956, the library was founded in connection with the establishment of Kernreaktor Bau- und Betriebsgesellschaft mbh: the location was in the Künstlerhaus at Karlstraße 42/44 in Karlsruhe, as construction work had not yet been completed on the future site near Leopoldshafen.
"Der Aufbau der kerntechnisch-wissenschaftlichen Bücherei erfolgte zügig, denn man wollte den Anschluss an die Entwicklung der Kerntechnik im Ausland finden." ("The nuclear science library was set up quickly because the aim was to catch up with the development of nuclear technology abroad.") (Teubner, Die Zentralbücherei 1956 - 1981))
The basic stock of the library amounts to approx. 400 books from the reference collection of Prof. Dr. Karl Wirtz, who moves from the Max Planck Institute for Physics in Göttingen to Karlsruhe. Further literature is being acquired. In addition to specialist literature from Germany, literature on nuclear technology from the USA, Canada, Great Britain and France is of particular interest. Most of these reports are obtained on a barter basis in exchange for own reports.
1956 - 1959 The head of the literature department is Dr. H. J. Langmann. In addition to the library, the literature department also included a documentation group, reprography and translators.
1957 The first "Daily Bulletin" of the Literature Department is published, providing internal information on the latest journal articles.
1959 Move to the newly constructed building of the Institute for Neutron Physics and Reactor Technology (INR) on Campus North.
1959 Change of management, Dr. Maria Kemmerich takes over as head of the department.
1960s
1961 A systematic catalog is created. The director of the Karlsruhe University Library, Prof. Dr. Ruthardt Oehme, offered the university library's assistance in this endeavor.
1962 Due to lack of space, the library moves from the INR to a former fire station.
1964 Move into the new library building 303.
1967 The plutonium card index is published as a reference sheet entitled “Plutonium-Dokumentation” and made available to external users on a subscription basis. "Schnellinformationen" ("Quick Information") replaces the "Tägliche Mitteilungen" ("Daily Reports").
1969 Introduction of electronic data processing (EDP) for cataloging, based on punched tape (Flexowriter).
1970s
1970 Publications are recorded using the Flexowriter punched tape system.
1971 The USA returns German wartime research publications on nuclear technology (see article in the BNN, August 15, 1997 edition) - these are archived in the library.
1975 The documentation group now belongs to the Fachinformationszentrum Energie, Physik und Mathematik (FIZ) (Specialized Information Centre for Energy, Physics and Mathematics); the translator group moves to the International Office
1975 Discontinuation of the maintenance of the Plutonium-Dokumentation and "Schnellinformationen".
1978 New construction of the pavilion, poster exhibitions.
1980s
1983 Online depositing of the Research Center's publications with a system from the IT company Plöntzke.
1984 Change of management, Dr. A. Miller becomes library director.
1984 The BIBDIA lending system is introduced under the name LARS (Literature Department Circulation and Research System).
1986 Introduction of the online catalog LASSO (Literature Department Search System Online) via the Fachinformationszentrum Karlsruhe (FIZ).
1990s
1990 Conversion of the publication collection with online research for research center staff.
1991 Online catalog via the research center's mainframe computer with ordering function for research enter staff.
1997 Consolidation of catalog and lending services, introduction of an Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) for research center staff.
